          Biography

          Emmy Noether's father, Max Noether, was a distinguished mathematician and a professor at Erlangen but he came from a family of wholesale hardware dealers.

          Her mother was Ida Amalia Kaufmann (1852-1915), from a wealthy Cologne family. Both Emmy's parents were of Jewish origin and the reader may be surprised at this since Noether is not a Jewish name. We should explain, therefore, how this came about and, at the same time, give some information on Emmy Noether's ancestors.
