Spencer Dryden, an American rock musician, is best known as the drummer for "Jefferson Airplane," "New Riders of the Purple Sage," and "The Dinosaurs." Born on April 7, 1938, in New York, Spencer's father, Willer Dryden, was the stepbrother of Charlie Chaplin.

When Spencer was still a child, the family moved to Los Angeles, where his father worked as an assistant director to Charlie Chaplin. Spencer fondly remembered watching his famous uncle perform in Hollywood studios. His father was a jazz enthusiast and often took young Spencer to jazz clubs.
